RESEARCH

2010 – 2015    Primary Clinical Researcher –Tobacco Smoking Cessation Initiative
The primary goal is demonstrating the feasibility of conducting smoking cessation in  Urology practices and with patients who presented with symptoms or conditions associated with smoking, which may include hematuria (either microscopic or gross), genitourinary cancer and erectile dysfunction. Currently we are demonstrating the feasibility of conducting smoking cessation and developing clinical research models for the implementation of smoking cessation in urology practices and patients. Other clinical outcomes include collecting clinical data (in order to define the rate of false reporting of current smoking status), establishing follow-up protocols, and tracking short term outcomes such as disease progression/regression.

2006 – 2014    Primary Clinical Researcher – Epidemiology of Overactive Bladder Epidemiological research on overactive bladder (OAB) in women and incidence of urinary incontinence. The primary research objectives is to determine how bothersome and frequent common OAB symptoms are to a sample of participants attending a women’s health fair in Rochester, NY.  Other objectives was to determine the Determine the prevalence of OAB, based on the screening survey scores, in the sample of participants and compare it to nationally published data. This project will provide data on the presence of a number of risk factors for abnormal bladder function and/or OAB in participants and assess for the impact of these factors on screening tool results. These are both novel and unique opportunities for this disease as the demographics and risk factors are usually overlooked and underreported.

2004 – 2013    Primary Clinical Researcher – Epidemiology of Bladder Cancer Epidemiological research on urologic oncology and stone disease. The primary research objective is to determine the long-term results of bladder cancer screening by comparing the 10-15 year outcomes of a population of men age 50 years and older who performed home testing for hematuria with those of a comparable and contemporary population of unscreened men. This project will provide not only the first opportunity to determine the long-term value of screening for bladder cancer but also will provide the opportunity to gain critical information on the long-term outcome of the full spectrum of newly diagnosed bladder cancer managed by contemporary standards in a geographically defined population. These are both novel and unique opportunities.
Other smaller projects entail studying the epidemiological aspects of stone disease in upstate New York.

RESEARCH

2004 – 2008    Primary Clinical Researcher – Immunohistochemical Analysis A pathological examination of human ureters retrieved from nephrectomy and cystectomy specimens will be analyzed in order to
characterize the ά-1-adrenergic receptor distribution along the ureteral wall. Mapping the distribution will assist in understanding the potential role of ά-1-adrenergic receptors might have in the pathophysiology of ureteral colic and stone passage. Consequently, this study can lead to a clinical study to evaluate the efficacy of alpha-blockade with ά-1- adrenergic receptor inhibitors, on stone clearance after extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL).

1998 – 2003    Primary Clinical Researcher
Multiple projects with Professor Ofer Nativ, Chairman of Urology at The Bnai Zion Medical Center, Haifa Israel. The work includes building and analyzing a prostate cancer database, as well as involvement in numerous clinical experiments and trials in the field of Urology.

1999 – 2001    Primary Clinical Researcher/Research Assistant
Developing protocols and databases for different infectious diseases with Dr. Isaac Srugo, Chairman of Clinical Microbiology at the Bnai Zion Medical Center, Haifa Israel. Projects include The role of Herpes Simplex Virus in NGU and Hematospermia, and the evaluation of the Bacterial and Candida Colonization of dental plaque in elderly dysphagic patients.

1995 – 1996    Summer Research Fellow/Research Assistant
Developed an in-vivo model of immunological tolerance in mice in the laboratory of Dr. Betty Diamond, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
